Wild, smoky, tar and cocoa elements on the nose, creamy and rich in the mouth, there is sweet  currant fruit here, yet also good acidity and fine tannins. A wine that could cellar well for two or three years, but give it to your Aussie red-drinking mates and watch their amazed reactions. "This is a gorgeous old-school Rioja. Complex, savoury, mouth-coating and engaging. Notes of mature fruit, smoked game, leather, black olive and cedar lead to a beautifully silky palate that delivers layers of fine texture and sweet berry flavours together with an earthy mushroom nuance. "Dark, deep, black-hued red colour with a little garnet-brick on the edge.  The nose is softly packed with good volume of savoury dark-red berry fruit harmoniously entwined with a layering of sweet and nutty oak.  This has a gentle density and depth.  Medium-full bodied, the palate has juicy and lively flavours of savoury red berry fruit with sweet and sour detail, and integrated nutty oak.  The flavours are up-front and relatively uncomplicated, and form a rich, rounded core with good underlying acidity, and light, fine-grained tannin extraction.  The palate has good drive and the wine carries with some vitality to a light, nuanced, lingering finish.  This is a harmonious, sweet-fruited Rioja Reserve with savoury red fruits, sweet and sour elements and nutty oak with gentle vitality and light grip.  Serve with pasta and slow-roasted red meat dishes over the next 4 years.  Tempranillo fruit fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 24 months in American oak" Raymond Chan, Mar 2018

This big, rich, full-bodied, Rioja is made by  Bodegas Valoria, barely 5 kilometres from Logroño, right on the road to Santiago very near the Grajera Natural Park. Bodegas Valoria was founded by the Pérez Foncea family of Fuenmayor in 1860 is the 6th oldest and one of the best-known wineries of the La Rioja DO. Originally oriented towards the local market the winery was purchased by Navarro Lopez in 2010 and its production facilities expanded to 1800 barrels. The winery now exports 70% of its production to 60 countries. A traditional blend of Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo aged 24 months in American oak
