"From estate fruit, vines on limestone-influenced soil. Very pale straw-yellow with green hues. The bouquet is full and intense, redolent of exotic florals, lime fruits and some tropical notes with lift. Medium to taste, soft and gentle, fine textures provide the background for soft lime, honeysuckle and jasmine fruit flavours. This is elegantly and beautifully proportioned, with acid cut and finesse providing a delicate and poised palate line. Interwoven nuances of citrus, jasmine, talc and honey linger on a sustained finish. This is archetype Waipara Valley Riesling with its exotic expression and delicacy" Raymond Chan, Oct 2021
"Luscious, moderately sweet Riesling with some honeyed botrytis influence. Made in a spaetlese style with good richness, plenty of weight and a near-perfect balance of acidity and sweetness. Distinctive wine with character" Bob Campbell, Master of Wine, Real Review, Nov 2021
The Mountford Riesling is pale straw with aromas of honey, mandarin skin and lime. On the palate, it has zingy acidity and residual sugar to balance. The mouth feel is elegant, and the 95 grams of residual sugar from 100% Botrytised fruit makes for a lingering and intense finish. This spaetlese style is drinking. This style is drinking perfectly now or can cellar for another 5 years.
The fruit for this Riesling is sourced from the Tussock Terrace on Glasnevin river bed. In 2011, North Canterbury had a good growing season and favourable ripening conditions which allowed for the development of Botrytis in the fruit.
At Mountford Estate they create wines of character and quality through a policy of watchful, non-interventionist winemaking. A combination of new and traditional techniques and technology are used. Mountford Estate has transitioned to using native yeasts, low sulphur and like all past vintages these wines continue with a no fining or filtration polciy where possible. The winemakers believe that this is the way to gain a true expression of site and vintage.
