"A classic Barossa Shiraz with an inviting combination of sweet dark fruit and chocolaty oak aromas and a palate with a sweet core of varietal fruit and supporting oak" Winestate, Mar 2023
Intensely deep crimson colour, powerful but full of grace and showing fine balance and structure. The wine opens with spicy blackberry notes. With time in the glass the wine reveals hints of cracked black pepper and then toffee, dark chocolate, and espresso coffee. Richly aromatic and velvety, full bodied and packed with plum, blueberry, hazelnuts, clove, and cinnamon spices.
Sourced from Barossa vineyards where the vines range from young (approximately 10 - 15 years old) to old (greater than 35 years). They are planted in a diverse range of sites and have slight variations in micro-climates and soil types, including red brown earths, sandy loams or dark clay soils. These variations contribute to the diversity of flavours in Samuel’s Collection Barossa Shiraz.
Late winter and spring rains have set the vines up for a high-quality year. The summer was mild with below average daytime temperatures and cool nights, which led to the development of fabulous colour, pristine aromatics and flavours with good natural acidity.
Matured for 10 months in 6% new Hungarian & French hogsheads and barriques. Balance in older hogsheads, barriques and puncheons.
With more than 170 years of unbroken independence, Yalumba continues to make wine at its founder’s home estate under the direction of the same family today. Samuel’s Collection honours Yalumba’s founder Samuel Smith, his spirit of independence and conviction to invest in the land and make great wine.
Food Pairing: Pair with dishes such as sage and oregano sausage with sautéed peppers and onions or pasta with lentil bolognese.
