"A heady waft of ripe red berries and a freshly mown meadow framed by eucalyptus trees sets the stage for a grand red berry entrance – plush, opulent and proud. This has rich redcurrant and blackberry speaking in a loud, clear voice, with the solid fruit platform propelled by a firm acid seam. It finishes tight, aided by a cluster of fine-grained tannins, which suggests a long, fruitful life in the cellar" Decanter
Full bodied, rich, classic. A vibrant dark purple. Complex bouquet of spiced plums, blackberries and red fruits with nuances of oak. Lifted with vibrant red berry fruits, this wine shows the vibrancy of our Greenock vineyard with a depth of silky tannins typical of our Nuriootpa vineyard and a freshness and spice from our higher elevation Craneford vineyard. Drink now or cellar confidently for up to 10 years from vintage.
The fruit for this Shiraz was traditionally sourced from the Elderton vineyard situated on the banks of the North Para River, Nuriootpa, Barossa Valley, South Australia. Today, this wine includes fruit from the three exceptional estate vineyards that the Ashmead family own.
Elderton was transformed from a vineyard supplying quality fruit to other wineries to a winery in its own right in 1982, and have since won much recognition for all of the wines, especially the Shiraz. Barossa Shiraz is now highly collectable worldwide, and the Elderton is always a benchmark for the region.
Our Barossa Shiraz comes from many parcels across our three vineyard sites. These vineyards ripen differently owing to their different aspects, elevation and soil types. Our Greenock vineyard is on the western end of the Barossa, first to ripen for us and always brings a vibrant bouquet and punchy tannin to our blend. Our Nuriootpa plantings bring a depth of tannin and a lovely sweet spiced fruit element and our Craneford vineyard is a more elevated site on leaner soils ripening later in the season.
The season leading into 2022 was mild, with enough rainfall to set our vines up for a low stress run into vintage. Very mild summer conditions, without heat spikes, allowed for gentle ripening and exceptional concentration of fruit flavours. This wine was fermented in a combination of open concrete fermenters with a portion in closed stainless steel fermenters, which helped to hold in fragrance and vibrancy. The parcels were kept separate as they went through malolactic fermentation in barrel, before further maturation in a mix of French and American puncheons to soften and build volume around the bold tannin structure of this wine. The parcels were then carefully assessed before blending and subsequent bottling to ensure the style and quality expectations of this wine were upheld. Predominantly older American and French puncheons, 24 months.
