Description

A brand new vintage of this modern, vibrant Rioja widely acclaimed in previous vintages as one of the best value Spanish wines in both the UK and USA. "This could well be Spain's best value wine." - Jamie Goode, Sunday Express (UK) "This is a super value in Rioja, one of the best values I tasted for this Spanish report. The wine has remarkable depth of flavor and length for its humble price.” - Jay Miller, The Wine Advocate

“Classic in style, the fragrant bouquet shows dark berry, cured meat, floral and walnut characters, followed by a finely textured palate that is elegantly fruited and nicely weighted. The wine is flavoursome and delicately drying, making it a wonderful partner to savoury dishes. At its best: now to 2017.”  Sam Kim Wine Orbit

Gran Familia Rioja is a partnership between UK wine-merchant  extraordinaire Guy Anderson and Bodegas Castillo de Fuenmayor a family winery with one of the longest traditions in Rioja located near Briones at the heart of Rioja Alta. The vines, with an average age of 25 years, are grown in premium Rioja Alta vineyards with soils composed of clay and limestone. The grapes are harvested at optimum ripeness and fermented in stainless steel tanks with the temperature controlled at 26°c. The wine is then aged for 8 months in oak barrels. Selection of barrels is of particular importance in Rioja where oak is such a critical element in winemaking. 50% of the wine is aged in American oak barrels and 50% in French oak. This results in the perfect balance of fruit and oak flavours.
