Description

GOLD, not once, not twice but three times!! 5 Star reviews and hard hitting endorsements.  Annnnd... from the fabulous 2014 vintage, the distinguished Gimblett Gravels and one of our country’s oldest wine producers.  An obvious conclusion, very easy decision wine lovers, head to the checkout now!

"Sweetly fragrant and immensely likable, this fabulously drinkable syrah is packed with dark fruit flavours with nuances of spice, game and cedar. The palate delivers excellent fruit concentration and refined mouthfeel, brilliantly structured by fine, chalky tannins. This is stylish and elegant, and full of delicious flavours. At its best: now to 2020." Sam Kim

"Hand-picked fruit, MS clone from the Mere Road vineyard and clones 174 and 470 from the Gimblett Road site, fermented to 13.2% alc., the wine spending 15-30 days on skins post ferment and aged in 15% new French oak barrels.  Very dark, near impenetrable, black-hued purple-red colour, very youthful in appearance.  The nose is gently concentrated with harmoniously melded aromas of ripe blackberry fruit, black plums and lifted black and violet florals.  Nuances of liquorice, Asian spices and iron-earth emerge and are intricately interwoven with the fruit.  Medium-full bodied, the palate features a deep, concentrated core of very ripe black berried fruits, plums and black pepper, revealing liquorice, Asian spices and violet florals.  The fruit is sweet and lush, but balanced by fine, grainy-textured tannins and extract that add to the body and mouthfeel.  This has good linearity, and the grip carries through to a long finish of black pepper and spices.  This is a well-concentrated, ripe, spicy Syrah with fine, grainy tannin structure and body.  Match with roasted or grilled game meat over the next 6-7+ years." Raymond Chan

The nose is vibrant, suggesting sweet spice and black fruit aromas with some black pepper notes and striking floral overtones. The palate is full, medium to full bodied with good fruit weight. It is very fresh without any hardness; 2014 is a seriously good Syrah vintage. The ripe tannins are really structural and finely textured.

The hand harvested fruit was lightly crushed to small fermenters. The fermentations were conducted on the skins with temperature peaking at 30ºC. Mission’s Gimblett Gravels fruit was fermented with cultured yeasts and had 15 day post fermentation macerations. MLF was in tank with inoculated and indigenous bacteria before racking off lees for barrel maturation. 15% of barrels were new, and French oak was exclusively used. The wine spent 12 months in barrel.

100% of the fruit was sourced off our Gimblett Gravels vineyards; Mere Road is planted with the MS clone with the balance of fruit from our Gimblett Road vineyard planted with the MS, 174 and 470 clones. Gimblett Rd MS fruit was harvested at 24.3 Brix on the 20 March; the other clones on 4th April at 23.2 Brix.  On Mere Rd harvest was on 2nd of April at 22.6 Brix. All vineyards were crop thinned and leaf plucked around the bunch zone.

Worthy of 4 1/2 stars this is excellent value for money, deep intense flavours with lovely subtle peppery finish. It has been a challenge not to keep opening bottles.

Tasty but still a bit young - I imagine it will be 5 stars or better in about 2 years so I'm laying most of mine down
