Description
"It is sweetly fragrant and inviting on the nose showing black/blueberry, cedar, mint chocolate and mixed spice aromas, followed by a succulent palate that is rounded and smooth. It is delightfully youthful and expressive. At its best: now to 2020" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Oct 2017
"Dark, deep, black-hued purple-red colour, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is elegant with softly packed aromas of blackberry and dark raspberry fruit melded harmoniously with dark herbs and a little black pepper. The aromatics build in intensity with aeration. Medium-full bodied, the palate is presented smoothly with flavours of blackberry and soft notes of dark raspberries, dark herbs, leaf and pepper. The flavours are integrated and form a rounded core. The fruit is supported by fine-grained, supple tannins that enable approachability. The wine flows seamlessly with the acidity soft and balanced. The flavours are carried to a lingering finish of black fruits, pepper and spice. This is a harmoniously presented Shiraz with blackberry, raspberry, herb and leafy notes on a supple palate with a spicy finish. Match with Middle Eastern cuisine over the next 4+ years. Fruit from the Central Valley, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged in American oak" Raymond Chan, Oct 2017
The Casillero del Diablo Shiraz is an intense purple colour. The first layer of aromas is highlighted with black forest fruits, predominantly blackberries and wild berries. Soon after the toasted notes of the barreling reveal a greater complexity, complemented with spiced notes, principally of pepper. On the palate, the tannins are firm from the outset and the fruit is mature. The final impression is that of freshness, largely due to its particular acidity. The finish is long and mature with tannins that dry most elegantly. Hints of caramel can also be clearly felt within the flavours.
Over a century has passed since Don Melchor, the winery is founder, created a legend. When he discovered his finest Concha y Toro wines were missing, he spread the word amongst the local villagers that the devil lived in his cellar. From that day, the wine has been known as Casillero del Diablo, the devil's cellar. And the wine thieves remain deterred.
