Description
- French oak
- Dark berry & cherry
- Spice & dried herb
- Silky & mouthfilling
"The wine shows a great degree of elegance with seductive savoury nuances. The inviting bouquet shows dark berry, dried herb, roast meat, vanillin oak and earthy mushroom aromas, followed by a succulent palate displaying terrific fruit weight and depth. Silky, mouthfilling and deliciously long on the finish. At its best: now to 2030" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
"Elegant and quite concentrated Pinot Noir with plum, violet, cherry and spice flavours. A fruit-focused wine that is deliciously accessible now but should develop well with bottle age" Bob Campbell, Master of Wine, Real Review
"A captivating bouquet of Noir with aromas of dried roses and fresh cherry, moments of strawberry and cherry, it’s quite savoury too with a bracken and dried herb quality. On the palate - savoury and dry, a core of fruit and dried herb flavours, firm tannins and plenty of acidity. A wine that reflects it home and soils, is young and needs cellar time to integrate and harmonise, which it will - so best drinking from 2023 through 2028+" Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier
"High toned aromatics showing ripe and juicy cherry notes with judicious oak nuances. Firm and youthful, with ripe, structured tannins" Decanter World Wine Awards 2022
"Only from exceptional vintages will we ever release a single vineyard Pinot Noir. With our Dakins Road vineyard, we believe that this site has an incredibly consistent output of quality. The vines here are maturing well within the alluvial river terrace. Even in the most difficult of vintages, Dakins Road can still produce some immaculate fruit full of concentration and ripe tannins. The vineyard is well regarded for its ability to grow wines of power with long-term cellaring potential. When constructing this wine from the barrel selection process, we believe it is key to include some parcels that are in new oak to help complement the already dense and powerful fruit characteristics. The likely uses of long maceration periods and some whole cluster work means we are building a lot of complex elements into the wines from this site. We are careful not to over do things and be sure that we are genuinely showing off the best of the vineyard" Eddie McDougall, Winemaker
Red, purple hue. Dense nose of dark cherry and plum fruits. Subtle oak and typical Gladstone salinity. On the palate this wine is rich, but also tightly woven. Dark fruit is fleshed out by toasty oak and firm fruit tannins. Great balance of acidity and overall structure.
Dakins Road was planted in 1996 and is the most unique of all our sites we manage due to its slatey soil profile and selection of Pinot Noir we have planted across the block. It has a bountiful palate of clones with both Pommard and Dijon clones available to us. We find the Abel clone performs the best and most consistently; and are able to achieve consistently good ripeness and phenolic maturity in the skins and seeds.
With much better fruit off the vines, we are able to mature the wines in high-quality new barrels and for longer periods. Further to this, we chose to utilise whole cluster fermentation to extract complex tannins and aromatic profiles. We also used up to 25% of new barriques from France, which the wine matured in for 14+ months.
