Halliday Wine Companion, 2022

Description

  • French oak
  • Berry fruit
  • Dark chocolate
  • Fine tannins

"Terrific value here with a bouncy, slurpy edge and a wine literally bursting with slurpy, pure plum, blueberry and boysenberry fruits. Flush with exotic spice and blossomy high tones, fine, sandy tannins swoop in to support to ripe berry and plum fruits and there is a nice seam of acidity providing the pulse. Lots of inherent drinkability and enjoyment here" Halliday Wine Companion, 2022

In the glass it’s coloured purple with a dense and dark body. A full-bodied and very aromatic Shiraz showing purple berry fruits, dark chocolate and integrated spices. The palate shows good weight and evenness whilst the fine tannins and integrated acidity drive persistence on the long finish.

In 2022 the Barossa experienced outstanding growing conditions. Harvest started approximately 2 weeks later than the past 10 year average with Shiraz being picked mid to late March. A wet spring provided optimal soil moisture throughout the harvest months, spring storms resulted in lower than usual fruit set and although yields were lower the quality was high. Mild summer temperatures facilitated a long and slow ripening period which resulted in optimum colour development, and balance between fruit flavour and tannin.

The fruit is partially hand-harvested before de-stemming and cool fermentation in small two tonne open fermenters with regular hand plunging. Matured in seasoned French oak (20% new French) for six months before bottling with minimal filtration and sulphur addition.

Take it to the Grave is a joint venture between Nicholas Crampton and South Australian winemaker Corey Ryan created to deliver interesting and rewarding wines whilst challenging a few established rules and preconceptions. The Take it to the Grave Shiraz takes on the mysteries and individual personalities of old-vine vineyards.

Food Pairing: Perfect with roast lamb and a rich, creamy potato gratin.

Lovely wine, tasting a bit more mature than its age suggests. Good fruit intensity, soft tannins and gentle American oak.
