"Wonderfully complex and enticing, the wine shows dark berry, cedar, anise and clove nuances on the nose. The palate delivers terrific concentration and fruit purity with a spicy undertone, leading to a splendidly long delectable finish. Sophisticated and sturdy at the same time, making it highly enjoyable. At its best: now to 2033" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Feb 2023
"Youthful fine-grained red with violet, cassis, black pepper, dark chocolate and spicy oak flavours. The wine opened as it sat in the glass and would benefit from aeration. Obvious cellaring potential. Elegant and refined" Bob Campbell, Master of Wine, Real Review, Aug 2023
"A deepenig purple and ruby core with a purple rim, very bright appearance. Aromas of blue fruits and purple flowers, sweet doris plums and milk chcolate, black currant and toasted wood scents. Baking spices and a red peppercorn note add complexity. Dry, taut and textured on the palate with flavours of dark berries and plums, baked raspberry and peppery spices. Firm tannins and acid set a strong foundation with fruit flavours weaving through. Well made, youthful and needing some cellar time with best drinking from 2025 through 2032+" Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier, Feb 2023
A vibrant Syrah with opulent blackcurrant and boysenberry notes on the nose, fused in harmony with the savouriness of cracked black pepper. Ripe berry fruit and spices flooding the palate, with fine tannins on the finish. A limited vintage with only 99 cases produced.
The 2021 Māwhitipana Ridge Syrah had a run as dreamy as its origins, a single vineyard in a sunny, hidden valley with a glimpse of the sea. Handcrafted by two families that live on the land as kaitiaki (guardians), this season was long, calm and dry. A hot summer with little rain produced low yields with highly concentrated grapes. The settled harvest period allowed ideal picking conditions.
The Ridge vintages are produced from the blocks of the vineyard owned and managed by Mair & Simon, so named for the both outlook and the slopes from which these grapes are harvested from.
