"Splendidly ripe and instantly appealing, the wine shows sweet plum, dark cherry, thyme, nutmeg and floral aromas on the nose, followed by a fruit-forward palate that's juicy and supple, finishing lingering and silky. Offering terrific value, it's succulent and delightfully drinkable. At its best: now to 2026" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
Blended using the expertise of locally based Master of Wine Norrel Robertson. Medium to full-bodied with fine, soft tannins, well balanced acidity and well-integrated oak flavours. Raspberry and wild berry fruits give way to a long, smooth, spicy finish.
Since Roman times donkeys or 'Burros' (in Spanish) have been used to work along the narrow paths between vines, which is where this wine takes its name. Garnacha (Grenache) is one of the most widely planted red wine grape varieties in the world and as it is a late ripening variety it excels in Spain’s warm, dry, sunny climate where the grape most likely originated. This is especially true when it’s from low-cropping vines like this blockbuster made by top producer Bodegas Santo Cristo Est 1945 in Campo de Borja in the heart of Aragon and at the foot of Moncayo mountain.
This is Grenache territory par excellence. Campo de Borja’s continental climate comes with a unique twist, the “cierzo” wind that blows cold, dry air down from the northwest; summers are very hot and winters are cold. The area consists mainly of high plateaus and hills and the DO is nicknamed “Empire of Garnacha” for its most famous grape.
Food Pairing: Mature cheese and meat, barbecued and is stews.
