This Reserve Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc embodies the essence of its terroir in an exquisite 2023 vintage. Aromas of passion fruit and feijoa are underscored by tart grapefruit pith, a subtle minerality and hints of fresh cut grass and herbs. Tasting reveals a crisp blend of citrus – lemon and lime zest, juicy pink grapefruit, complemented bytropical fruits and accented by basil and green bell pepper for a savory edge. The wine’s balanced acidity and minerality are the backbone, extending length and achieving a structured finesse that earns this wine it’s place in our Reserve range.
We crafted Toi Toi Reserve Sauvignon Blanc from three Marlborough vineyards, each of which bring their own expression to the wine; Brookdale Vineyard in the Southern Valley’s, our new Calrossie Vineyard nestled in a secluded valley between the Wairau and Awatere Valleys and Wrekin Road in the Upper Brancott Valley.
It was an uneasy start to Marlborough's growing season with uneven blooms leading to moderate Sauvignon Blanc yields. This was offset as looser clusters avoided disease better and weathered rains well. Cool nights were pivotal, controlling fungi and maintaining grape acidity. Patience paid off with March and April's superb weather, producing grapes with high sugar levels, vibrant flavors and balanced acidity.
Only the most powerful and intense grapes are selected for our Reserve label. Our goal is to bring these incredible flavours from grape to bottle with little interference. This starts by harvesting in the cool evening to retain fruit purity and flavours.
In the winery the wine is given 2-3 hrs of skin contact and then gently pressed. This helps add structure while no fining means we retain more of the natural flavours. The wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks with an array of yeasts; some to enhance aromatics and some to provide savoury notes, weight and structure. The blending process takes 3-5 sessions of refining the wine to create the ultimate expression of Sauvignon Blanc our vineyards can produce. This Reserve vintage was made from 7 parcels of wine, 6 fermented in stainless steel and 1 in Puncheons. The addition of barrel fermented wine adds more weight and drive along with a savoury complexity.
