"An irresistible buy, this is better than many Pinot Noirs selling for over $45. From estate-grown vines, mostly planted in 2009, it’s delicious now, with deep colour, a beguiling fragrance, mouthfilling body and an array of cherry, plum, spice, herb and nut flavours, showing excellent complexity and personality" Michael Cooper
"Seductively complex and engaging, the wine shows sweet berry, smoked game, dried herb and toasted spice notes on the nose, followed by a wonderfully weighted palate that is both elegant and flavoursome. It's silky, flowing and refined with gorgeous savoury nuances, finishing splendidly long and appealing. At its best now to 2024" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Jul 2020
"Fresh, bright, high-energy pinot noir with cherry, red berry, fresh herb, spice and anise flavours. A distinctive wine from the greener end of the ripeness spectrum supported by refreshing acidity" Bob Campbell, Jun 2020
On the nose this wine has aromas of rich leather, indian spices and black cherries. While on the palate it is earthy with a light smokiness matched with refreshing Black Doris plum. It has a well-balanced acidity which gives it great length and ageing potential.
This Pinot Noir comes from the youngest vines on the estate planted in 2008. This block was planted in a much higher density to create their own little micro climate and also allow each vine to put all its effort into the small number of bunches it is producing.
At Mountford Estate, they create wines of character and quality through a policy of watchful, non-interventionist winemaking. A combination of new and traditional techniques and technology are used. Mountford Estate has transitioned to using native yeasts, low sulphur and like all past vintages our wines continue with a no fining or filtration policy where possible. We believe that this is the way to gain a true expression of site and vintage. The vineyard is set in a park-like environment on the North West face of the Waipara Valley’s eastern hills below the Teviotdale range. Dubbed the golden mile, the aspect gains high amounts of light and heat. The soils, which are marl (active limestone), add a fine minerality to the finished wines.
