"Intense, ripe syrah with plum, dark berry, chocolate-mocha, vanilla, pepper and spicy oak. A classy wine with impressive density and underlying power, although it is deliciously accessible. Excellent value at this price" Bob Campbell, Master of Wine, Real Review, May 2021
A deep purple-red in colour, a core of rich plum and berry-fruit is lifted by fragrant spice, violet and liquorice aromas. The palate is a medium weight and supple with a long finish.
Church Road embraces Old World winemaking with one arm and technological advancements with the other. And it all begins with fruit grown in Hawke's Bay. Church Road Winery, renowned for being the first in New Zealand to craft exceptional quality Bordeaux style red wine, pioneered the creation of the Hawke’s Bay wine industry. Church Road wines are crafted using the most exceptional quality fruit from vineyards across Hawke’s Bay, together with traditional winemaking techniques to create highly acclaimed award-winning wines.
Their pioneering winemaker, Tom McDonald (1907 - 1987) dramatically elevated the quality of winemaking in Hawke's Bay. His lifelong dedication to crafting fine wines helped establish the superb reputation that the region and Church Road are known for. Church Road honours Tom's legacy with an unwavering commitment to pushing the quality boundaries of Hawke's Bay winemaking.
This wine is unfiltered and some precipitate may form with time. We recommend decanting. It is highly reccomended to cellar this wine as it will continue to benefit from aging.
Food Pairing: Well matched to a range of meat and game or robust vegetarian dishes particularly displaying more earthy or savoury elements such as mushrooms, eggplant, cavelo nero, pulses and cheese.
