Fruit sourced from Longfield Farm Hill Block in the Southern Valleys of Marlborough. Clay rich soils. Vine age 8 years.
The 2020/21 growing season started with a cool spring, resulting in a moderate flowering, naturally lowering vine yields. Summer was warm and dry and fruit was picked in early Autumn in pristine condition.
The fruit was hand picked with the majority being destemmed and fermented in four ton open top fermenters. 10% whole bunches were included to add freshness and vibrancy to the wine. Aged in French oak for 11 months 20% of which was new.
Tiraki pays homage to the local Maori name for Marlborough “Kei Puta te Wairau” or “Hole in the sky over Wairau”. This is important to the winery given their Maori heritage and longstanding family connection with the region.
Three siblings and one rogue man flew in from around the world to shelter from the pandemic in March 2020. Bunkering down in their home region of Marlborough during the national lockdown got them thinking of creative ways to keep themselves entertained. The idea of creating their own wine label occurred whilst they tasted the first batch of home distilled quince schnapps. Tiraki celebrates the calmness of New Zealand’s isolation from the pandemic chaos as well as the benevolent mountains that protect the Marlborough valleys from storms.
Food Pairing: Perfect with butterflied lamb leg over charcoal or braised beef shin ragu.
