Description

  • Dry style
  • Apple crumble
  • Baking spice
  • Zesty acidity

This Pinot Gris is a well-balanced and fruit-driven wine with a touch of wild complexity. Flavours of fresh pear, apple crumble, and a squeeze of lemon with an aromatic nose of cinnamon, beeswax, baking spice, and jasmine notes. The pallet is a nice tension between crisp zesty acidity and the textural lick of roundness of the finish.

Over the past 15000 years, the Ngaruroro River in Hawke's Bay has laid down some spectacular terraces with shallow stony silt loams over red metals. The certified organic north-northeast facing Osawa Vineyard sits on these ancient terraces, overlooking the river in Mangatahi Terraces subregion of Hawke's Bay.

The vineyard sits approximately 25km inland from the Pacific Ocean and sees minimal influence from it's cool breezes. The slight elevation and inland nature can result in cooler night time temperatures and some of the warmest day time temperatures of any Hawke's Bay subregion, this diurnal shift is crucial for growing grapes with superioir structure and acidity.

The free run juice and light pressings were fermented in stainless steel using an organic inoculated yeast and fermented slow and cool to dryness. A small pressings portion went into seasoned French barriques for wild fermentation, bringing a hint of sweetness and character brought to the final blend. This mixed fermentation and frequent lees stirring is key to the palate texture, giving a balance between the spicy complexity of the puncheons and the fruity freshness of the tank component.
