"Beautifully ripe and inviting, the bouquet shows ripe apricot, Gala apple and lemon/lime zest aromas on the nose. The palate is equally attractive with excellent fruit intensity together with fine texture and crisp acidity, leading to a lengthy juicy finish" Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, Jan 2020
This wine has a complex array of flavours, with lifted aromas of blackcurrant, passionfruit and grapefruit, along with hints of flowering herbs, jalapeño and bell pepper. The palate has a refreshing but elegant acidity, with appealing fruit weight and a very moreish, salty minerality that leads through to a pleasant and lingering finish.
Holdaway Estate 2019 is an estate grown wine blended from all of the winemakers vineyards. The Holdaway family has nearly 40 years’ grape growing experience in the Dillons Point and Lower Wairau areas of Marlborough, New Zealand.
The 2019 vintage was an outstanding one for Marlborough. A cooler period through flowering, which naturally lowered crop levels. A warm and dry Summer provided perfect ripening conditions, resulting in clean fruit with excellent flavour concentration. Wine from Dillons Point/Lower Wairau has become known for its unique and distinct flavours which this wine displays.
The vineyards have a varied range of soils from fertile free draining vigorous soils to difficult, tight clay soils. They have all greatly benefited from compost applications, cover crops and targeted nutrition over recent years. Experience has shown us that this results in optimal flavour production and balance in our Sauvignon Blanc wines.
In 1842 James Holdaway arrived in Nelson and by 1853 at only 17 years of age he was working in Marlborough. One of his many jobs was driving a bullock dray carrying wool from the Awatere Valley to the Wairau Bar. In 1864 he purchased land in Dillons Point on the lower Wairau plains which he named Lowlands. Now his descendants grow Sauvignon Blanc grapes on this land.
