Description
"This is mouth-filling and engaging with wonderful weight and texture. The instantly appealing bouquet shows dark cherry, toasted nut, roasted beetroot, violet and mixed spice aromas, leading to a concentrated palate that is powerful yet elegant at the same time. The wine exhibits gorgeous fruit richness as well as seductive savoury notes, making it irresistibly attractive. At its best: now to 2022." Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, August 2017
"Moderately dark, even, ruby-red colour with youthful purple hues, lighter edged. This has a firmly concentrated and tightly bound, deep nose of ripe dark raspberry and black-berried fruits harmoniously entwined with dark herbs and nuances of black minerals, along with nutty oak, unfolding dark plum and liquorice elements. Medium-full bodied, the palate features rich and lusciously deep fruit flavours of dark raspberries, black cherries and dark-red plum fruit intermixed with soft notes of dark herbs, spices, liquorice and minerals, and nuances of nutty oak. The palate is rounded with a deeply concentrated, rich core and line with plenty of fine-grained tannin structure, and integrated acidity. The wine carries to a soft, rich and lingering finish of plums and liquorice. This is a full, rich, and deeply concentrated Pinot Noir with rounded berry and plum flavours along with liquorice and spice complexities, and fine extract and structure. Match with lamb, beef and venison over the next 6 years. Hand-picked fruit, clones 5 and 115 from ‘Felix’s‘ vineyard in the Awatere Valley, vines planted in 2003, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 14 months in 25% new French oak barriques. 250 cases made." Raymond Chan, Oct 2017
Our Single-Vineyard wines are pure expressions of their variety and true reflections of the terroir of our estate vineyards. The 2015 Felix’s Vineyard Pinot Noir displays dark plum and floral aromas, with subtle hints of mocha. Dark, rich layers of fruit on the palate lead to a velvety finish.
This special bottling of Pinot Noir showcases the very best of our estate and is made only in years when fruit is of exceptional quality. Careful canopy and yield management, including leaf plucking and shoot thinning, ensure great concentration and character. High-quality, low-yielding clones (5 & 115) have been carefully matched to individual micro-blocks within our vineyard. To extract optimum color, flavour and tannin we use traditional, Burgundian hand-plunging techniques during fermentation. 14 months in French oak barriques provides additional aromatics, flavours and structure.
